I do not profess to be an expert in hat history, but I do love the look of a beautiful “Tea Party Hat”!
I did some research of how women’s hats were started and what I found out was it was in the last 17th century that women’s hats began to emerge and not be influenced by men’s hat fashions. I am so glad that they were inspired to create such beauties. I only wish that hats were still apart of our everyday wardrobe. Although, I guess they would get in the way and are a little unpractical for our everyday busy lifestyles! However, we can still seize the moment to dawn a beautiful hat on special occasions such as:
church, Easter, funerals, weddings..., and of course TEA PARTIES!
I have made about a half dozen hats for different affairs. I made my Aunt a ‘Victorian Style’ hat on a fancy hat stand as a gift because she also loves everything Victorian. And I have also made several hats for center piece displays for each table set for the Red Hat Ladies Society Afternoon Tea that I catered. It was so much fun! Each lady took turns passing around my hats to try on. They said I needed to go into business of making Tea Party Hats. One business at a time - thank you! It was a lot of work making each one, but it was so much fun too.
It is natural to think of wearing a Hat to a tea party. It has been passed down through the centuries as a tradition. Hats, gloves, fans, pearls, etc are all apart of the Tea Party Attire we think of when someone says “Tea Party”!
